The Wink Hub is a great all-around smarthome hub that allows you to connect hundreds of different devices to it from handfuls of manufacturers. Not only that, but it lets you automate devices so they can work together to make your day-to-day life easier.
RELATED: How to Set Up the Wink Hub (and Start Adding Devices)
This is accomplished using Wink Robots. A Robot is an automation task that consists of a trigger and an action, similar to how services like IFTTT work. So if you have a smart light bulb and a motion sensor connected to your Wink Hub, you can set up a Robot to have them work together so that whenever motion is detected, the light bulb turns on.
Wink makes it really simple to set up Robots, and we’ll guide you through the process. For this guide, we’ll be turning on a light whenever a motion sensor detects motion, and turning it off once motion goes undetected after a couple of minutes.
Start by opening up the Wink app on your phone and hit the menu button up in the top-left corner of the screen.
Tap on the “Robots” tab at the bottom.
Tap on “New Robot”.
Toward the top, tap on “New Robot” under “Name” to give the Robot a custom name.
Give it a name that describes what the Robot will do, which will make it easier to identify it in the list of Robots when you end up creating a bunch over time. Hit “Done” when you’re finished.
Next, tap on “Something” in the “If this Robot Detects” section.
Select the device that will trigger the action. In this case, it will be my office closet’s motion sensor.
Tap on “Motion”.
Make sure “Detects Motion” is selected and then hit “Save”.
I’m going to leave “Anytime” and the option below that alone since it doesn’t apply in my situation, but this basically allows you to have the Robot enabled during a specific period of time during the day.
Next, tap on “Make this Happen” under “Then”.
Select the device that will activate when the motion sensor detects motion. In this case, the “Office Closet Light”.
Tap “On” and then adjust the brightness to where you want it, as well as the color temperature if the bulb supports it. Hit “Save” when you’re done.
Tap “Done” in the top-right corner of the screen.
Your newly-created Robot will appear in the list and is ready to go! If you ever want to delete it or just temporarily disable it, tap on it and you’ll have those options at the bottom.
Of course, you also need to create another Robot to have the light turn off after there’s no motion detected. You can then tap on “For Longer than (Optional)” to choose a duration.
Choose an amount of time and then hit “Save”.
After that, continue making your Robot using the steps above as reference. It’ll be the same except for the light turning off this time, instead of on.
