As with most any game with loot in it, Valheim groups things together in lovely little clusters. This ensures that each set of objects doesn’t take up too much inventory space. In Early Access, units combine in many different numbers.

Some items, like cooked meat and neck tail, collect into bunches of 20 individual pieces. Others, like resin, leather strips, and deer hide, form stacks of 50. Still others, like flint, accumulate into sets of 30, and arrows into heaps of 100. There’s really no rhyme or reason right now.

How to Separate Stacks

To divide these item stacks, open your inventory by pressing “Tab.” Then:

Hover over a grouping Hold “Shift” Left-click the group

A small pop-up window will appear with a picture of the object, how many are in the bunch you’ve selected, and a slider. Move the slider backward to choose how many pieces you want to remove. Then either press “Cancel” to discard your changes or “OK” to accept them. The number you’ve chosen to take out is now attached to your cursor and can be moved to another inventory or chest slot.

This is likely something you’ll want to do often in the early- to mid-game, especially until you purchase Megingjord from Haldor the Merchant in the Forest Biome, which increases your carry weight from 300 to 450.

And that’s how you split and separate item stacks in Valheim. It’s a small mechanic but a beneficial one when crafting, building, and exploring. You won’t have to take everything with you to build that raft, and neither will you have to dump a whole pile of stone because you can only carry 49 instead of 50.
