Before superhero movies were the biggest things at the box office, director Sam Raimi brought Spider-Man to life with this origin story starring Tobey Maguire. Maguire’s Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider, gains superpowers, loses his Uncle Ben, and decides to fight crime. He romances his childhood friend Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and takes on the evil Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) while figuring out his newfound abilities.

He fights villains on multiple fronts, including the small-time criminal who becomes the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), a professional rival who bonds with an alien symbiote to form Venom (Topher Grace), and his old pal Harry Osborn (James Franco), who becomes the new Green Goblin.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Spider-Man’s saga is rebooted courtesy of director Marc Webb and new star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, alongside Emma Stone as his love interest Gwen Stacy. The Amazing Spider-Man retells Peter’s superhero origin story and pits him against a maniacal scientist who becomes the villain known as the Lizard (Rhys Ifans). It all connects back to the mysterious disappearance of Peter’s parents, who left him in the care of his aunt and uncle.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone return for this sequel, which was meant to set up an extended Spider-Man cinematic universe. Consequently, it’s full of villains and future villains, led by Jamie Foxx as the electricity-powered Electro. There’s also Dane DeHaan as Peter Parker’s friend Harry Osborn, who becomes the Green Goblin, plus Paul Giamatti as the Rhino, all heading toward a supervillain team-up.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Peter Parker gets rebooted again as he joins his fellow superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where his mentor is Iron Man himself, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Tom Holland stars as Peter, who is back in high school but has already experienced his now-familiar origin story. Peter faces disgruntled salvage company owner Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), who outfits himself with stolen technology to become the Vulture.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Peter Parker’s second Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure takes him and his classmates on a trip to Europe, where they process their feelings following the “blip,” the MCU event that erased and then returned half of the universe’s population. Tom Holland’s Peter also struggles to declare his feelings for his classmate MJ (Zendaya), while battling against illusion-creating villain Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

This animated take on Spider-Man focuses on Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), a biracial Brooklyn teen who gains spider-powers similar to Peter Parker’s. Miles encounters spider-heroes from various other dimensions, including versions of Peter Parker voiced by Jake Johnson and Chris Pine. He must team up with his fellow spider-folk to stop the crime lord Kingpin (voiced by Liev Schreiber) from destroying the space-time continuum.

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Taking a cue from Into the Spider-Verse, the third Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man movie also journeys into alternate realities, bringing together villains from the previous Spider-Man movie incarnations. Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx return as past Spider-Man adversaries, and Tom Holland’s Peter Parker has to team up with some other surprise visitors from across the multiverse in order to defeat the villains and send them back where they belong.
